Kodak Announces Next-Gen PULSE Digital Photo Frame

Kodak has announced the latest iteration of its PULSE Digital Frame. The frame now features social network integration, allowing users to comment on pictures received and connect to pictures on Facebook and Kodak Gallery.

Sungale ID800WT Digital Picture Frame Released

Sungale isn’t exactly a household name when it comes to digital frames, and we generally shy away from no-name brands, largely because they’re cheap junk. But Sungale has something that on the surface appears pretty interesting. Their new 8″ frame features WiFi, touch screen input and access to a ton of content sources like YouTube. They also offer localized content, all of which is configurable on the frame itself.

Softbank Mobile Japan to Release 3G Digital Picture Frame

Obviously learning nothing from T-Mobile’s failed experiment with the Cameo, it looks like Softbank will release a digital picture frame this summer with embedded wireless data card. Of course the promise is to easily and quickly be able to deliver photos to the frame via email, MMS message and the like, but once you add in the cost of the data plan, the value just isn’t there. Softbank does have a twist though, one of the frames comes skinned with Hello Kitty. Maybe T-Mobile should have tried NASCAR?

Android Digital Picture Frames in the Works

Android was developed by Google initially as a mobile phone platform. It’s since branched out to netbooks and now digital picture frames. Digital frames are generally saddled by horrible operating systems and arcane menu systems that make using them difficult. Leveraging a platform like Android could not only make things easier, but broaden the possibility of user-created enhancements and ultimately more flexibility in the platform.

JOBO Nano 7 Announced – .35″ Thick 7″ Digital Frame

JOBO has announced a new ultra-thin 7″ digital frame dubbed the Nano 7. It’s the first of a series of skinny frames they intend to release this year. This model actually comes in three different flavors, Basic, Pro and Media. The specs vary a little with each, but they’re all just .35″ thick and will ship in June starting at $74.90.

CompoBank Working on 3D Digital Picture Frame

Last year Fujifilm announced a digital camera and digital photo frame pairing that would create 3D images for viewing on the frame, without the need for specialized glasses. Korean compyan CompoBank has made a similar announcement, with plans for release in Japan this year.

eBay Catalog Update Includes Digital Picture Frames

eBay has just made it much easier to sell digital picture frames through their marketplace. In an update to their catalog database, they’ve added roughly a few hundred digital frames to their database which will make it much easier to list these products for sale.

Samsung SPF-87H & SPF-107H Digital Picture Frames Announced

After starting to look like they were re-thinking being in the digital picture frame business, Samsung has announced the new SPF-87H. The 8″ frame offers an 800×480 widescreen resolution and Samsung’s high-end design treatment called “Touch of Color.” The SPF-107H will likely follow in the same mold at a 10″ frame size.

Motorola Femtocell Digital Picture Frame Picks up Industry Award

Last September Motorola showed off a concept digital picture frame that included a femtocell, which is used to relay your cell phone signal to the carrier via broadband Internet connection. Motorola figured the digital frame form factor would be an easy way for people to integrate the femtocell technology into their lives. At CTIA this year, Motorola was again showing off this technology and took home an innovation award for their efforts.

FrameChannel Adds Content Syndication Platform

Their new service dubbed +FrameChannel lets content publishers easily syndicate their content on the FrameChannel platform. Digital Frame owners who currently pull from a list of content sources will have many more options if publishers adopt this system.

Smartparts Shutting Down

In a somewhat sad move, Smartparts is ceasing operations. Smartparts was definitely a second tier manufacturer of digital picture frames, but they had a lot going for them. We liked their latest wireless offering and thought their large-screen digital frames at CES looked good. But in a statement from the company, “the economy” has taken another victim.
