Last September Motorola showed off a concept digital picture frame that included a femtocell, which is used to relay your cell phone signal to the carrier via broadband Internet connection. Motorola figured the digital frame form factor would be an easy way for people to integrate the femtocell technology into their lives. At CTIA this year, Motorola was again showing off this technology and took home an innovation award for their efforts.

At CTIA this year, Motorola was again showing off this technology and took home an innovation award for their efforts.

From the release:

CTIA Wireless 2009 E-Tech: Network Infrastructure – In-Building/Local Area Network Solution
First place: Motorola CDMA 9100 Series KeepMeConnected Femtocell

The KeepMeConnected Femtocells – CDMA 9100 Series features an integrated touch-screen digital picture frame with a built-in femtocell. This is the second award for this innovative product. It was selected as an honoree of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Awards.

The CDMA Femtocell 9100 Series includes a session-initiated protocol (SIP) / voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP) soft phone and provides enhanced mobile phone coverage inside the home. A first of its kind, the CDMA 9100 Series allows users to deploy a femtocell – a small, low-cost, wireless access point – connected through a broadband connection for optimal wireless performance and coverage. The device also serves as a touch-screen digital picture frame, fitting aesthetically into a home environment.

Motorola has loaded a new video to YouTube that shows off a digital picture frame concept they’re working on that includes a femtocell and voice over IP phone.

A femtocell essentially acts as a relay for cell phone networks using your Internet connection. Motorola thinks the inconspicuous digital picture frame is a great place to hide such a piece of equipment, while also turning your frame into a soft phone; complete with speaker, video camera and Bluetooth headset connection.

The idea makes a lot of sense, why toss another device onto a crowded workspace. Instead, leverage the somewhat ubiquitous digital picture frame and give it more functionality. While I’m definitely sold on the idea of disguising the femtocell in a digital frame, I’m not sure many will use a frame as a VoIP phone, especially since the PC already does that quite well and in the home, a land line or cell phone are more convenient for most.

Of course at this stage the idea is largely conceptual and femtocells are far from widespread adoption. Even though, it’s hard to complain about such an innovation in a space where differentiation is uncommon.
