Android Digital Picture Frames in the Works
Written on May 14, 2009 by Brian and filed under News
Android was developed by Google initially as a mobile phone platform. It’s since branched out to netbooks and now digital picture frames. Digital frames are generally saddled by horrible operating systems and arcane menu systems that make using them difficult. Leveraging a platform like Android could not only make things easier, but broaden the possibility of user-created enhancements and ultimately more flexibility in the platform.
Macnica Inc. out of Japan is working on customizing Android for the digital picture frame market. In conjunction with Fujitsu Software Technologies, the software can do the standard slideshow thing, along with the capability to share photos over a home network via DLNA.
While an early version of the device is on display at the Embedded Systems Expo right now in Tokyo, it will be at least a year before this technology is commercialized. Even so, it shows aggressive thinking in a market that’s dominated by the mundane. The digital picture frame platform is ripe for innovation, hopefully Macnica can rattle the market. [via Tech-On]
