Televisions Pushing into Digital Frame Space

LG is showing off a new concept TV at CES this week called the Digital Photo TV. This 47″ LCD TV panel is essentially just a TV that goes into a digital photo playback mode when turned off.
The LG TV uses a reduced amount of power while in this mode, only 10-15% of what it would consume while watching TV. LG is able to do this by leveraging the TV’s idle memory instead of an external source. It remains to be seen though how much room that idle memory could provide and what sort of options users would have for viewing their pictures.
Still, the concept is interesting and has room to grow if LG determines consumers want such a technology. Of course we’d like to see an auto-shutoff feature that turns the panel off entirely when the room is empty. Even 10-15% of normal power consumption is a lot when you’re talking about a TV. Especially when it’s probably safe to say that while the TV is off, the room is empty more often than not.
