iMate Shutting Down Momento Live Paid Content Service
Written on Jan 22, 2009 by Brian and filed under News
iMate, who’s better known for their corporate smartphones than their digital picture frames, is shutting down their paid service which enables online services for their frames. Frankly, we didn’t even know iMate was still in the frame business, their current lineup is several years old and was never updated after the initial release.
Either way though, this is a case study as to why users shouldn’t buy a product that primarily only works with a paid service, of which there’s no alternative should that paid service be discontinued. The T-Mobile Cameo and Ceiva’s line of digital frames come to mind as a few others consumers should be cautious about.
Given the ease of consuming digital photo feeds or photos via email, it’s surprising that anyone charges for web-based services like this. That’s probably why iMate ended up shutting down the service as renewals (the service was free for the first year) probably didn’t come streaming in at the pace they expected.
