Hello,

Does the SPF-85V supports Video-Streaming over an UpnP-Server such like Windows-Media-player? I Have an SPF-83V and it does only supports diplaying Fotos from Windows-Media-player.

Thanks

i have this frame and its not too bad. battery life could be better but at least it has one. the biggest plus is that it plays avi movie files so it can also function as a media player for movies, tv shows or music. the orientation sensor on mine is messed up and is not so snappy when i change from portrait to landscape and vice versa. i had it working as a mini-monitor w/ my laptop (XP professional) and its pretty sweet and very handy. it will handle my 16GB SDHC cards and USB fobs w/ no problem; the only issue is that when hooked up to the laptop as a mass storage device i can only access the 64 MB internal and not the fob or SDHC card; kinda inconvenient...

According to framechannel.com the refresh rate of tthis frame is 1 hour and not 24.

RSS feeds work perfectly here. It might be your firmware? I now have my hyves photo RSS feed on it and my Windows live space. Works great.

The only thing I dislike is when you shut the frame down, (vacation etc.) all settings are lost.

After some more testing with specialised Picasa RSS feeds (they didn't work) my conclusion is that the online features of this frame shouldn't be taken into account when making a purchasing decision, at least not until a major firmware upgrade. And without that, other frames will probably win because of their much lower prices.

Currently it is much easier to download pictures and copy them on a cheap pendrive or SD card than to get this frame to display them from the Internet, especially for non-technical users. (I am an IT professional and still couldn't make it work.)

The frame works with Picasa RSS feed and some other RSS feeds like http://feeds2.feedburner.com/GarfieldComics but many I tried does not work at all.

For Web page URLs it crashes on over 90% of them. The frame keeps working but the Web interface stops responding until I turn it off and on again.

Examples not working:
http://www.pbase.com/gilazouri/china
http://www.flickr.com/photos/36522137n00/sets/72157600073140366/

The RSS feed of the second link does not work either, it downloads the album name but not the images.

RSS feed refresh seems to be 24 hours, so it cannot be used to show webcam or weather images. The downloadable US manual mentions an Infolink service with weather, stock and news but my one bought in Europe does not contain this feature.

The biggest issue I have with this frame is that the slide show setting has only 3 speeds and slowest of which is way under a minute. I want this to change say once a day so it acts more like a "picture" frame. Even setting up my framechannel account and specifying the speed of the images there has no effect on the rss feed on the frame itself. Also, it seems to take a loong time to sync with framechannel and no manual way to tell it to update the images from the channel. It does update but VERY infrequently. These two flaws have left me a bit disappointed.

This frame seems amazing! And it looks amazing, both the frame and the interface. But think of all the possibilities. You can use it as a secondary monitor and park your Photoshop tools, or your Sidebar gadgets, or a browser window sports scores/stocks/etc, or an IM client. And I think most photosharing sites can send out personalized RSS streams so with WiFi you should be able to use it with your own photostream. Since you can stream music over WiFi too, you can connect the headphone jack to your home theater and stream your music collection. The only problem with it is the price.

Good review.
Do you know whether this frame allows you to create separate albums on internal and external memory? I have only so far found that Philips frames allow you to do this.

For me this is a big plus as even the most expensivre frame (e.g. Sony) will lump all photos it finds on an SD card into one huge slideshow.

Does this frame allow you to navigate a directory structure and select just one directory (aka album) to show in a slideshow? This would be a big plus.

Also, do you know if the non Wireless version of this frame includes a battery? I have seem conflicting reports regarding this from several sources.

Thank you very much for this review!

I've been eyeing this frame for a couple of months now, finding it my favorite of all the possibilities I have here in Europe (rather limited market as opposed to the US counterpart), and as such have been missing a "deeper inspection" of the unit for a while.

I've been planning on buying it for my parents, but I'm still a bit hesitant about it because of the fact that it still requires a somewhat tech-savvy mind (for people aged 50+) to navigate and especially configure this thing, especially when English isn't your native language.

Basically I'm kinda curious as to how much I can control this frame from afar, to avoid them having to do all the technical stuff. Will I be able to give them simple instructions to go to the photo menu, select "online" and then be able to decide more or less precisely what sources the frame should use (i.e. can it just show a collection of all of its web sources, or do they have to select a specific source)? Will I be able to set slideshow settings (speed, transition, etc.) one time and have the frame remember forever (not necessarily remote)?

Also, I don't understand why you haven't mentioned anything about the FrameChannel option in this review. As far as I can see it adds quite a bit of functionality to the frame, among those Facebook and Flickr "channels", as you mentioned a need for in your review.

Since you have the hands-on experience I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions on my situation. Basically I'd like to know if you think this is the frame I should buy for my parents.

Thank you.
/Michael
