Fujifilm Working on 3D Digital Frame

Written on Sep 30, 2008 by Brian and filed under Fujifilm, News

Fujifilm has unveiled plans for an entire photography system that includes a digital camera and digital picture frame that can shoot and display images in 3D, without the need for light filtering glasses. The technology was on display at Photokina and Fujifilm claims it will be market ready in 2009.

The digital camera, dubbed “FinePix Real 3D System,” has two lenses that capture the left and right images, later used to blend into a single 3D image. Fujifilm uses a new processor that was developed in-house to process the two images from the camera into one 3D image or movie.

3D Digital Picture Frame?

For the digital picture frame to work, they’ve created a new “Light Direction Control System.” This control module can be embedded on the back of the LCD display that when paired with a screen filter will convert the visual data into two channels that come off at slightly different angles. The end result is an image that looks 3D without the need for special glasses.

The digital frame on display was a proof of concept that measures 8.4″ and displayed VGA resolution. The frame is far from ready though and it remains to be seen if Fujifilm stays committed to this project. While it sounds fun, it’s hard to tell if consumers would adopt and invest in such a technology.
